Small enough to fit on a key ring or pen sized. Now with the developments in laser technology and profusion of suppliers, buying the laser you need with out wasting a lot of money is becoming increasingly difficult and frustrating. This article lists the most common differences in lasers and tips on how to choose the laser you need.

Choosing the right laser pointer for your needs can take hours of research! There are numerous models to choose from with different colors, power outputs, beam diameters, etc. Most high powered laser pointers can only be bought online so you will not be able to physically try the laser before making your purchase. In addition, there are numerous companies out there that specialize in laser pointer sales so you really want to do your research before choosing which company is right for you. In this guide, I will go over some of the basics you need to know before proceeding to choosing what is right for you.

First thing you want to consider is probably the color of your laser. You need to know that the wavelength of the laser pointer determines the color. A laser pointer that emits a wavelength of 532nm (nanometer) will be green. Most laser companies offer laser pointers in green 532nm, red 650-660nm, or blue 405-473nm (some will offer orange 594nm). This is almost a preferential thing. The important thing to know here is that green laser pointers are the brightest of the group as your eyes are more sensitive to green light.

The power output determines the brightness and the burning capabilities of your laser pointer. Power output is measured in mW, milliwatts. The higher the power, the brighter the laser! A 5mW green laser pointer has a bright visible dot, however, the laser beam is only very faintly visible in dark conditions. A 35mW laser pointer has an extremely bright visible dot and has a clear visible beam at night and in lit conditions (in a lit room). If you can imagine a laser saber that extends to the moon, that is what the 35 - 55mW laser pointers look like at night. At around 95mW, the laser beam is even more solid in dark conditions and is now capable of melting through dark plastics and various dark objects.

I write dark objects because a laser is just a concentrated beam of light. On light surfaces, the beam will just reflect instead of being absorbed as in dark surfaces. Therefore, if you are trying to melt through something light in color, most laser companies will suggest coloring the surface with a dark marker. As you increase in power output, the laser becomes brighter and can burn through dark objects faster. At the time of writing this article, there are no laser pointers with a visible beam under direct sunlight. This will take a tremendously powerful laser pointer with power outputs in the Watts (1000mW equals 1 W)!

If you can remember from the top paragraph, green lasers are the brightest. A 5mW green laser pointer is probably as bright as a 50mW red laser pointer. In general, if you don't have anything against the color green, most companies will recommend you purchase a green laser pointer. You need to ask yourself what you are purchasing this laser pointer for. If this is for general pointing in close range, purchase something below 15mW. If you want long distance pointing or nighttime pointing with a visible beam, purchase something between 35 - 75mW. If you want to play and burn things, get something above 95mW.

The beam diameter and beam divergence are quite simple to understand. The beam diameter is just the thickness of the laser beam at aperture (where the laser comes out). If you want to do a lot of burning, get a laser with a small beam diameter and high power output. This will give you the best burning ability at close range. Have you ever played with a magnifying glass when you were a little kid? If you can concentrate the sun's energy in a small dot, you can burn paper and other fun things in your garden. The same theory applies to lasers. If you have a small dot, all of the laser's power is concentrated which can cause the most amount of damage. Ideally, you want a small beam diameter and a small beam divergence.

The beam divergence is the change in the beam's thickness relative to distance. If the divergence is zero, the diameter of the laser beam does not change with distance. If the divergence is positive (most laser pointers have a positive divergence), the laser's beam diameter increases with distance. For example, if you measure the beam diameter at 25 feet, the beam diameter maybe only 1 inch. When you measure the laser beam at a farther distance, say 100 feet away, the beam diameter maybe increased to 3 inches. Ideally, you want a small divergence where the diameter grows slowly with distance. A low divergence will also give you a farther shooting laser pointer.
